Principle 1 - Music isn't "Sacred," but... Print E-mail

"Everything is permissible—but not everything is beneficial... Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others." 1 Cor 10:23-24

Technically, there is no such thing as "Sacred Music." But there are religious lyrics (words) and religious people (souls). In God's view, these two things matter greatly because God's word and God's creation in his own image are meant to last.

"Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away." Matt 24:35

If you played a real nice instrumental beat right now, you couldn't tell if it was by a Christian/Muslim/Jewish or not (don't confuse culture with faith). It's the lyrics that can make things about God or for God or just the opposite. Just as this website itself is not "religious," but it could be populated with religious people doing "religious things."

But music is an important part in our lives, because we make it that way. We're saturated in it, everywhere you go, our culture is usually heavily defined by it. More importantly, we love to discuss it and share it, it's a strong bond with other people. Think about it, punks, emo kids, ravers, hiphopers, even old people (most don't listen to your music) have generationaly held a core of their identity to their music style. A lot of memories and emotions are also tied with music culture.

Not only is it identity, but music can pass intellectual bounds and go straight to the heart. It's why movies use it to heighten a scene, you might not know that the people in the movie are talking about, but once you start hearing themes play you FEEL it. It makes you want to dance, move, shake or even slow down.

What about lyrics? Lyrics can shape values and character, wrong or right ones. You can see it in the hippie movements, where ideologies were spread through fun hooks. An even more visible example today, MTV has defined (or promoted) most of youth culture now a days. This is where people often skip out on the responsibility, but like it or not, the children are listening. And so then the future. They might not understand or even read the lyrics, but others around them might be living it, and that's where words matter because it effects those around us if not us.

So, being conscious is not a part of music, but lyrics. Put it together, music and lyrics can move the mind and feet.

So don't be afraid of music that doesn't carry a certain label, all truth is God's truth (meaning even secular can speak a truth that relates to the spiritual without knowing it). Be free and never hold anything but by God as sacred. Sure it might help you, maybe even teach you Godliness. But holding ANYTHING man made or inspired as sacred or final truth is idolism. Look at pop music (they don't call them pop idols for nothing) and you'll understand, in some cases, those fans are willing to die for a lie. Some pass by this important point because they believe they have is "the real," but recognize, you're doing the same thing as the commercial industry when you pride your music. Hear what they speak, what is it about?

"They are from the world and therefore speak from the viewpoint of the world, and the world listens to them." 1 John 4:5

There's always an alternative and more importantly, a difference. You just got to dig for it, because technically, we've buried it in our own trash...
