Why use Scripture? Print E-mail
Written by Audible
You might be asking, why do I see bible verses being used by some users on this site? The use of scripture is about application of faith (spiritual trusting).

"...because the Spirit is the truth" 1 John 5:6

The values and foundation behind building this site strive to be biblically based (God authored) and God inspired (by prayer and spirit). It's with very good reasons why we do this (some "secular" reasons and some spiritual). The people in the site might not have a similar faith or maybe none at all, but the haven is a result of individuals pursuing faith.

Some might see this as preachy or judgmental, but in fact we're built to be MORE open because of this foundation, allowing more people to exist in the same space:

"...consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. " Philippians 2:3-4

We only want to use it in ways of supporting moral arguments, hopefully in a respectful way that can be applicable to your life. We must also admit, sometimes the bible is not clear on issues that are not really that important to living life. In those situations we must debate in light of other known absolute truths and do what is right for humanity in hope and faith that God is in control.

Reasons why we strive to be inspired by scripture and choose to quote it:

1. Citing/We didn't come up with it - This inspiration and directive is not being pulled from out of the air.
"This is what the LORD says: 'Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom...'" Jeremiah 9:23

"He who speaks on his own does so to gain honor for himself, but he who works for the honor of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him." John 7:18

2. Longevity/Reproducible in different cultures/generations - The testament of time shows how stable the scriptures have been though time and cultures have changed and keep changing. The word of God should be transcultural and most important text if it is true. And it has shown itself as cross cultural seen in its adaptation around the world.
"...through faith, though he is dead, he still speaks." Hebrews 11:4
"...his faithfulness continues through all generations." Psalm 100:5

3. An alternative to worldly (Pop culture doesn't follow it) - Scripture has values that the media isn't talking about and sometimes hate it. It inspires above this world, a higher source that is sometimes unseen but fully active in reality.
"And even if our gospel is veiled [isn't understandable], it is veiled to those who are perishing [temporary]." 2 Corinthians 4:3

"So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." 2 Corinthians 4:18

4. Expandable - Although we might quote a little of something, if you choose to read deeper (it's why we give the verse number), you can get many other truths or come to your own perspective. In other words, the bible usually says it better than us.

Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out! Romans 11:33

"And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight" Philippians 1:9

5. Practicality/Applicable Values - Going back to being expandable, it's meant to be lived out and to have results (what the bible calls fruits) but many times we don't read it like this, we expect wrong results in usually selfish reasons. We hope any argument made, weather accepted or not at this time, can have results and consequences in life that will tell you what is the truth.
"Elijah went before the people and said, 'How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.'" 1 Kings 18:21

"I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot; I wish that you were cold or hot." Revelation 3:15

"Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world." 1 John 4:1

"No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it." Hebrews 12:11

6. Authoritative with no hierarchy - It is something that governs us all individually, there is no middle man to God but God himself in Christ. The word is there for us to read and discuss - if you follow textbooks or newspapers, it's in the same vein.
"Now that faith has come, we are no longer under the supervision of the law... there is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus." Gal 3:28

"...do not threaten them, since you know that he who is both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him." Eph 6:9

"When [the king] takes the throne of his kingdom, he is to write for himself on a scroll a copy of this law... It is to be with him, and he is to read it all the days of his life so that he may learn to revere the LORD his God and follow carefully all the words of this law and these decrees and not consider himself better than his brothers..."  Deut 17:18-20

7. Glorifies the Source of all - One of the most potent truths of God is his son (the word) whom brings back all glory to whom it belongs. In other words, God's action of sending himself as a savior brings himself glory of saving us. Scripture tells us life and creation is all about this.
"...but let him who boasts boast about this: that he understands and knows me... for in these I delight," declares the LORD. Jeremiah 9:24

A few reasons why one should use scripture in their personal life:

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Teaching: what you should know

Rebuking: what you should avoid doing or stop doing

Correcting: what you should do differently

Training in righteousness: what you should begin or continue doing

All prophets, laws of moses, psalms were used by Christ in these ways, quoting portions to teach, correct, and guide. If you believe in Christ, you have to believe the bible because he did. The bible is God's love letter to humanity, it shows an overall attempt of God to reclaim his people through a relationship made final in Christ.
