What Is It For? by Braille

I think as an MC one of the main ingredients to our development is finding what motivates us. Weather we are motivated to showcase skills, communicate a message or express our heart - we need to discover what drives us.

The music industry isn't a get rich quick scheme. Very few people are able to make a long standing career out of hiphop music. If your motivation is simply money, then chances are your "hustle" will be short-lived.

Hiphop is a musical art-form and like every genre, it takes practice to develop skill. Some people are more naturally gifted then others, but at the end of the day we all have to practice hard in order to expand our abilities.

Here are some tips that will help develop your MC skills.

1. Learn how to be honest with yourself. It's easy to convince ourselves that we are fresh, but an honest artist always critiques their own work and strives for improvement.

2. Practice rapping at loud volumes. It's not a matter of screaming, but learn how to articulate your rhymes with confidence. Don't whisper when you rap. When you rock a live concert, you need a strong voice and good breath control. If you imitate live scenarios when you practice then you will learn how to USE your voice.

3. Play beats and freestyle to them. You don't always need to take freestyling serious. Sometimes you can just let beats roll - mess around with different rhyme patterns and vocal inflections. Freestyling is one of the best ways to learn YOUR style. Try to capture your true thoughts, emotions and inflections.

4. Learn about microphones. The main thing between you and your audience is a microphone. Weather you are doing a live show or recording in a studio - it's important to learn microphone techniques. Learn how to hold the mic. Learn how to capture your voice in the studio. Learn the right distance between your mouth and the mic so that you can get the best possible sound.

These are some very simple steps, but it's important that we understand the foundation. I believe every MC can have their own style. Who you ARE, that is your STYLE. The more you learn about yourself and the more comfortable you become with yourself - the better you will be able to write lyrics that truly reflect who you are.
