Why should we care about Words? Print E-mail

"Death and life are in the power of the tongue." Prov. 18:21 (KJV)

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." John 1:1

God's word is so beautifully poetic it had the power to create the world.
He said it, and it was done, "Let there be light..." and there was light. (Psalm 33:9)

As creatures made in God's image, we have characteristics of such, the power (although many times not the wisdom) to create. This is expressed in many aspects of culture and the arts. Unfortunately, the loan of power (for we all must go one day) has been overly abused and taken where it shouldn't be. It can be seen in the culture of "pop icons" and other items that don't deserve praise. They tend to let people down because of their temporary nature and imperfection, no rapper or singer will last forever in the conditions they speak for themselves, they live on their ego and pride. When their career is over, then our society is on to the next "pop icon."

These quick fixes along the way tend to be reckless and trash words like "love" and throw them around like its nothing, bashing them to the point of no recognition. You can tell a lot about a person who is loose with their mouth. They tend to gossip and yell madness and lies when times are tough because they cannot endure. This is why we care, and should care, about words and how they are used, because they don't just effect us inside, they effect those around us (especially the youth and future that are easily scarred). Wounds can heal, but harsh words can break a man driving them into guilt, resentment, and fear or bring wisdom and understanding. We need to understand this power of creation we have and stop creating destruction.

But understanding is also why we thirst for God's words which will not not let down, scripture. I'm confused by a lot of "religious" people in their lack of faith in their own text - if it is the truth, read it fully, apply it in faith and it shall work according to God's will (bear fruit)! It's not a quick fix we're talking about here, true scripture is time tested and God inspired, just as the world God created is (though we trash it). Bottom line is, being able to control what you say is a mark of maturity and trait of God.

"Do not let ANY unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building OTHERS up according to THEIR needs, that it may benefit those who listen." Ephesians 4:29

"My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry... get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you." James 1:19-21

"It is written: 'I believed; therefore I have spoken.' With that same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak" 2 Corinthians 4:13

“For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12

Jesus called the crowd to him and said, "Listen and understand. What goes into a man's mouth does not make him 'unclean,' but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him 'unclean.' " Matthew 15:10-11
