Dear Manny Pacquiao

Thank you for the turkey! Also, thanks to a really good friend, who told me you'd be giving turkeys away today.

Sincerely,
mike

i like you?

Sometimes I like to ride, and when I ride, I like to listen to "Rollin" by DâM-FunK. I posted the instrumental version on this blog a while back (when he had it up for download on his MySpace page), and now I'm re-uping it because of popular demand (2 commenters). I guess I like to make people happy? Anyway, you can grab that 'West Coast feel good make me wanna boogie' funk here. It won't be up for long though, because if DâM-FunK finds out, I'm taking it down with a quickness. And while you're grabbing the free jams, you should purchase Rhythm Trax by DâM-FunK out 12/9 on Stones Throw too. Just in time to get your float on for the holidays.

"If we got the fo-od...

you know it's the 1st of tha month..."

It's not the first yet, but this song was brought up recently and I've been listening to it A LOT lately. "Thuggish Ruggish Bone" was cool too, but when this came out???... this was the shit.

At the time, my best friend, Marcus, tried to peep me on Crucial Conflict, but I wasn't into it. They were cool, but I thought they were trying to sound too much like Bone Thugs or something. We got into arguments about who had that fast rapping style first, and he would say stuff like, "Crucial Conflict had it first, but they were underground so we just didn't know about it." I was like, "Maan, does that even count? Second, is that true?"

Anyway, we were both wrong. Twista held the Guinness World Record for being the fastest rapper back in 1992. Bone Thugs got together in the early 90s, but they didn't come out with "Thuggish Riggish Bone" until 1994. Snap, talk about the complete opposite of overnight celebrity. Back in 1992 I was listening to Black Sheep, the Low End Theory, Humpty Dance, Kriss Kross, and all that. Who was Twista?

Tambourine Dream EP

Sometimes spells of madness seem to hit for no apparent reason. I'd like to smash something into a thousand tiny pieces right now. Not in an angry Ultimate Warrior type of way though. More in a casual, I'm in a nice store and happen to bump into a really expensive vase, type of way. But it's a record like this that helps me cure the feeling. Anyway, I finally picked up my copy at the lab today. I actually need to get the CD version too. Word from the ttl site is "...the Flagrant Fowl dudes got loose on this CD with twelve more remixes..." I highly recommend it. They've recently released their Canyon Dancing EP, which I need as well.

The Do-Over parties

One of the best in LA. If you're an out-of-towner looking for something to do in LA on a sunny Sunday afternoon, this is the place to get a little taste. Sucks that it has to end soon, but here's some info from the newsletter.

Ahhh... Fall is in the air: the tempature is cooler, nighttime falls earlier and The Do-Over is getting ready to hibernate, but that doesn't stop us from going out with a bang. The Cosmic Kids opened things up Sunday with a wicked display of cosmic disco, boogie, & house madness. If that didn't wet your palate, then a live performance by the legendary Large Professor (Main Source, Nas, Busta Rhymes, Erik B & Rakim, Kool G Rap, etc) surely did with J.Rocc on the decks (Peep). With the difficult task of following this performance, the Funky President dropped a mind blowing impromptu set of records handed to him from Jamie Strong's bag. DJ Spider made his Do-Over debut a memorable one with a party rocking set for the ages. Rounding out the evening was another hometown hero making his Do-Over debut, DJ Mishaps with the extra funky goodness. Special thanks to everyone who did-over The Do-Over by checking out Haycock @ LAX.
