(This was taken from a revised speech to Session [A])
"represent hip-hop right if you want it to get respect." - braille
Who here claims hip-hop as a part of their identity? Saying "yes" signs you up to not just be a representative of hip-hop, but also be responsible to your brother and sister in it. Why? Because hip-hop is about its people. I know some might disagree, but I believe hip-hop can be whatever you want it to be. One just needs to claim it and care about it to change its direction, remember who took ownership of it, it did not create us. Hear me out on this... when DJ Kool Herc began this culture before it was known as Hip Hop, he did it so by putting together block parties (Sessions), but he didn't play any biggie or 2pac, that didn't even exist! He played selections of latin, rock, soul, reggae, and music from other cultures. on that mixture, and in doing so he UNITED OTHER CULTURES of the time, like graffiti and break dancing. The place gave a home in their choice to unite under a new name, Hip-hop. And this is why I believe, everyone has something to offer to hip hop culture. Let us never lose the tradition of uniting and keeping peace. Let it never become an issue of US vs. THEM, hiphop wouldn't be the hiphop we know now if that was true. And true heads will agree, hiphop sounds different everywhere (east coast, west coast, southern, etc.), but we still try to get along under the name because it adopts us with OPEN MINDS. That's why its about having open mics, open tables, open floors. Its about building bridges between differences on what we share in common.
But make no mistake, culture's definition WILL change with time, I'd argue it already has (old school, party, gangsta, bling, to gangsta bling), but the basic needs of it's people will not. And that's what we should really BUILD on. People will always need relationships, health, wisdom, knowledge, and faith. and i believe hiphop is a great medium for addressing it. culture is not the solution, but the tools, you are the solution together by serving, and there's a lot more to you than just music. there’s no doubt in my mind, hiphop's people can help change the way we deal with the poor, orphans, or even change the current aids epidemic. mos def once said “if you want to know how hiphop is doing, how’s its people doing?” and last time i checked, its people was hurting on the path it was on, there's still a lot to do. other paths to try. are we doomed to repeat the same mistakes because we refuse to unite and learn from our history?
so whatever you might have, if you say you are hiphop, bring it. as little or as much as you think it might be, bring it to the (turn)table. help with session A, volunteer at Foundations, or even start your own session in your community! but don't not do nothing, you deprive not only yourself from living life but deny what the culture might have to benefit from you! you might not think you have anything, but just look at me, i don’t even look hiphop, but that little session i volunteered to help out at a couple years ago in a dorm lobby became the team you're a part of now, doing much bigger things than i ever imagined. and that's only a result because it's not about me.
hiphop at its best will not care about about being business or politics. when it all comes down to it, we're family, and realizing that is what will help us go forward through anything.
peace.

Live life with:
Unity with One Another
"Be humble and gentle. Be patient with each other, making allowance for each other's faults because of your love. Always keep yourselves united in the Holy Spirit, and bind yourselves together with peace." - Eph 4:2-3
Unity with One God
"We are all one body, we have the same Spirit, and we have been called to the same glorious future. There is only one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and there is only one God and Father, who is over us all and in us all and living through us all." - Eph 4:4-5
Strength by Diversity of Given Gifts
"However, he has given each one of us a special gift according to the generosity of Christ..." Eph 4:7
"He is the one who gave these gifts to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers." Eph 4:11
Uniting by God's Purpose, your responsibility
"Their responsibility is to equip God's people to do his work and guild up the church, the body of Christ, until we come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God's Son that we will be mature and full grown in the Lord, measuring up to the full stature of Christ. Then we will no longer be like children, forever changing our minds about what we believe because someone has told us something different or because someone has cleverly lied to us and made the lie sound like the truth. Instead, we will hold to the truth in love, becoming more and more in every way like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church. Under his direction, the whole body is fitted together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love." Eph 4:12-16
